How to Calculate CGPA — Step-by-Step
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the single number that summarises your academic performance across every semester at university. In Pakistan, almost every HEC-recognised university uses the 4.00 scale. Here's exactly how to calculate it.
The CGPA formula
Step 1 — List every course
For each completed course, note its credit hours (usually 1, 2, 3 or 4) and the grade you obtained.
Step 2 — Look up each grade point
Use the standard 4.00 scale:
| Grade | Marks | Point |
|---|---|---|
| A | 85–100 | 4.00 |
| A- | 80–84 | 3.70 |
| B+ | 75–79 | 3.30 |
| B | 71–74 | 3.00 |
| B- | 68–70 | 2.70 |
| C+ | 64–67 | 2.30 |
| C | 61–63 | 2.00 |
| D | 50–57 | 1.00 |
| F | < 50 | 0.00 |
Step 3 — Multiply & sum
Multiply each grade point by its credit hours to get the course's quality points. Sum every course's quality points and every course's credit hours.
Step 4 — Divide
Divide the total quality points by total credit hours. The result is your semester GPA. Roll it across all semesters and you get the CGPA.
Worked example
| Course | CH | Grade | GP | Quality Pts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Calculus | 3 | A | 4.0 | 12.0 |
| Programming | 4 | A- | 3.7 | 14.8 |
| English | 2 | B+ | 3.3 | 6.6 |
| Total | 9 | 33.4 |
GPA = 33.4 / 9 = 3.71 (Dean's List range).
